Help the Aged press release: Learning Disability Coalition releases CSCI figures on social care criteria

26 November 2007

Commenting on the figures released by Mencap and the Learning Disability Coalition which show that an increasing number of local authorities are rationing care services and tightening eligibility criteria for vulnerable people, Kate Jopling, head of public affairs at Help the Aged said: "The figures collected by the Commission for Social Care Inspection paint a depressing picture of the reality of our underfunded social care system."

" The sad truth is that while our Government talks the talk on prevention and early intervention, it isn't providing the money needed to make this stick at the local level. The recent Comprehensive Spending Review was true to form in allocating a tiny increase for the provision of social care. It just simply is not enough to stop the rot. "Our ageing population deserves better than to be left to struggle with debilitating conditions, only able to access support when things get really desperate. As the population ages, a more equitable and strategic approach is urgently needed."
